Dance Update! Ft. New Pointe Shoes, A Ballet Q&A, and more

Hey daydreamers! Once again, sorry this post is late. I thought I’d have a ton of time to work on this post this week, but we ended up painting my room this week! I’m SO HAPPY with my new room – we painted it from a bright teal to a peaceful, serene light grey with a pink undertone. I also got an adorable new bedspread and nightstand, and I’m getting some more things for it for my birthday! I’m going to do a mega-room tour after my birthday in a few weeks, so definitely be on the lookout for that!

When I asked you guys for some post ideas in the comments on my fall aesthetics post, a highly requested idea was a dance post! It worked out perfectly since I just got new pointe shoes (and a new leo, ballet flats and tights), and you guys asked some amazing dance-related questions. First, I’ll be tackling the dance store haul, and then I’ll get to your questions and the updates!

๐Ÿฉฐ dance haul ๐Ÿฉฐ

the grey is SO MUCH PRETTIER in person, this pic doesn’t show it very well!

First, I got some new ballet flats! (If you’re not a dancer, ballet flats are just normal ballet shoes. Dancers en pointe, or dancers who wear pointe shoes, call them that as opposed to pointe shoes.) I DEFINITELY needed these. I’ve had my old ones for almost a year, they were getting pretty small, and they had massive holes in both toes! Seriously, you could see my both my big toes popping out. I’d been putting off getting them since the dance store is downtown (so over 30 minutes away), so I grabbed these when I got my pointe shoes!

my dog in the corner ;P

Next, I got this ADORABLE black leo (non-dancer translation: leotard)! My studio normally has a strict dress code where you wear an assigned color, except for Saturdays. We were *finally* moving up to royal purple this year, which I was so excited about, but they decided to be more relaxed on the dress code this year (I guess because of COVID?) and let us wear pretty much any leotard. I really wanted a fancy black one, and I found one that fit perfectly!

It has a sweetheart neckline with lace straps that create a keyhole effect in the back. It’s super comfy, too! The only downside is you need someone to help you fasten and unfasten the back. I really love this new leotard and I’m so glad I was able to get it! Thanks, mom!

Not pictured, but I also got some new tights since mine ripped. ๐Ÿ™‚

Finally, I got new pointe shoes! My old ones died (non-dancer translation: broke down to the point where they stopped supporting me) and I needed new ones really badly. I got pretty much the exact same ones but slightly wider.

Fun fact for non-dancers: Pointe shoes have no left or right when you first buy them! As you wear them, they start to sort of mold to your feet as they get worn down. I got the Mirella Whispers in size 4XX, since I have super small and narrow feet for some reason!

sewing the ribbons and elastics!

What outfit that youโ€™ve worn is your favorite? I really liked my recital costume from several years ago that had a long tutu and a really pretty red color. It had this cute little velvet bodice with rosettes and velvet sleeves, but ironically that was the year I couldn’t make the recital and didn’t end up wearing the costume. XD

What are your best ballet tips? My best tip is to stretch at home! In class you don’t really get enough time to stretch to achieve a lot of flexibility. By stretching at home, you’ll get your splits and have better leaps and extensions! My other tip is to try your best to memorize the combination in class. This was really hard for me and still is, but if you know the combination you’ll be able to focus on dancing instead of what comes next!

Tell us about your favorite dance memory. My favorite dance memory was backstage at the Nutcracker with my two best dance friends (sadly they don’t dance at my studio anymore, and I miss them a lot!) and we made these crazy videos that I still laugh at thinking about.

Is ballet expensive? How much were the pointe shoes? I hear they can be up to, like $90, but Iโ€™m not sure thatโ€™s true. Yes, ballet can get pretty expensive. My studio is cheaper than most, but you have to pay a monthly tuition plus costume/recital fees. Leotards can be anywhere from $20 to $90, it mostly depends where you get them from! And yup, pointe shoes are around $80-$95. Thanks for the question, Chloe!

Do pointe shoes hurt? Sometimes yes, sometimes no. When I have a 2 1/2 hour rehearsal, my feet usually hurt pretty bad after dancing for so long, but for a 45-minute pointe class it’s not that bad! It depends on if you have a bad blister or the correct shoes.

Does ballet ruin your toes? It definitely makes them look pretty gross! I have a lot of blisters, bunions, and red spots (EW!) but that’s kind of the mark of the dancer. I don’t know about ruin, but for sure beat them up quite a lot!

Whatโ€™s your favorite leotard style? Ooh, I love this question! I LOVE a spaghetti strap with a V-neck for everyday class. I think sweetheart necklines are so pretty, but they definitely look better on others than on me.

What does it feel like when you wear pointe shoes? At first it feels like you’re stuffing your feet into wooden bricks and walking around in flippers, but then you get so used to them that they just feel like regular shoes!

How long have you been doing ballet? I’ve technically been doing ballet since I was three, but I’ve been at my studio since kindergarten! This is my 7th or 8th year at my studio, but I’ve been dancing seriously for 2 or 3 years now (aka more than once a week).

Thank you SO MUCH to Diamond, Chloe, Haley, Natalie, and Libby for your amazing questions!

๐Ÿฉฐ dance + life update ๐Ÿฉฐ

Finally, it’s time for the dance update! I thought I’d update you guys with how dance is going, how pointe is going, and some exciting ballet-related stuff!

Dance has been going great! I currently have four classes a week: Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. I think I’m doing 4 hrs and 45 minutes a week right now ๐Ÿ˜ณ It’s a lot, but it’s a TON of fun! We’re working on a new variation (non-dancer translation: solo from a ballet) for our online Christmas show and doing lots of pointe work. Pointe has been going pretty well too, but my new shoes feel slightly wide and I’m getting a blister. XD We have to wear masks and check out temperatures at the studio, and some people are Zooming into class and taking it online.

I recently auditioned for my studio’s pre-proffesional nonprofit ballet company, AND I GOT IN!!! *cue the confetti* I’m an apprentice, which means I’ll be learning every. single. part. in case I need to go on. I’m so excited because this puts me on track to new roles and opportunities, and (fingers crossed) possibly playing Clara in the Nutcracker someday! I had my very first rehearsal with the company on Saturday, and it was SO fun! It was so cool to be apart of something like that and dance with older girls I’ve looked up to for years. They were all super nice, too, which is great! It’s definitely a BIG time commitment, though – tonight I’ll be up at the studio for four hours! Wish me luck! ๐Ÿ˜‰

This post was so fun to make! Once again, I’m super sorry about the lateness of it. I’m still getting used to my super duper busy schedule and have been slowly figuring out how to squeeze in blogging with everything else! Thank you guys SO MUCH for all of your support and participation in the last couple of posts, and thanks again to everyone who asked questions! If you have any posts you’d like to see, don’t hesitate to let me know through the comments or contact form! Love you guys so much & I’ll see y’all next week. Bye daydreamers!

  2. This was really cool! I enjoyed learning more about ballet and pointe. Also, I think we painted our downstairs basically the same shade of gray.

Leo (Diamond translation – Fitz) Hehe, I doubt anyone will get that but me, but that’s just where my brain goes.

  3. It was interesting to read this, as I used to do ballet but decided it wasn’t really my kind of thing. I really liked your leotard! It was very pretty; would you happen to know what store you bought it from? -Madeleine

  4. Oh, didn’t you say you re-did your room? That is awesome (& lucky)!! You are so lucky to be able to paint your room and get a new bedspread. I share a room with my younger sister, so I’m pretty sure that my parents wouldn’t allow me to. Though I’ve tried re-doing my bed and the side of the dresser.

  5. Wow! Thatโ€™s so cool! *P.S. even thought I canโ€™t see it much I LOVE UR ROOM ๐Ÿ˜‚* I used to do ballet then my schedule started getting pretty busy and I had to quit :(. I was on Pre Pointe B tho. *at least I think so? It was pre pointe something.*

    1. You should go for it if you really want to do it! It’s hard work, but really rewarding. Even if you don’t think you’ll “get somewhere”, if you think you’d enjoy it, you should definitely give it a try! โค

  6. Nice! Ballet sounds like a lot of fun (and work XD), I wish I was coordinated enough ( and flexible enough) to do some sort of dance, but I doubt I’d do that well. The only dance class I have ever had was a classical (I think) dance class, and it was a lot of fun, but I wasn’t that good at it, lol.
Congrats on your new pointe shoes and leo!

  7. Heeeeeyyy we’re both level 6, purple is our class color, and we both made company this year! If you didn’t live in Texas, I’d be wondering if we danced at the same studio lol.
Oh also, now we both have rooms painted gray, haha. Great post!
