Top Ten #1 // 10 Summery Songs & Books

Hey Daydreamers! There’s always that one book or that one song, and whenever you read it or when it comes on, you instantly think of summer. Today, I’m going to be sharing some of my favorite books and songs with summery vibes that I could reread or listen to over and over!

✨☀😎 song: “hola” by hollyn ✨☀😎

This is probably one of my favorite songs ever, and also one of the most summery ones I know. This song is bursting at the seams with summer vibes, and it’s by one of my favorite artists. It’s a little repetitive, but it’s such a great song to just chill out to and it has an awesome message!

PS…I did a cover/AG lyric video to this song over at my other blog, American Girl World, if you want to check that out here! (#shamelessselfpromo lol 😄)

✨☀😎 book: 11 before 12 by lisa greenwald✨☀😎

Even though most of 11 Before 12 is about starting middle school, this book is so summery! It’s a super relaxing read about two BFFs who create this bucket list of things they need to do before they turn 12. It’s such a fun novel, and one of my favorite books ever.

The first day of middle school means trading in freeze tag at the pool for new schedules, fabulous outfits, and a fresh start. But for eleven-year-old Kaylan, the chaos of new locker combinations, cafeteria cliques, and potential first kisses is more than she can handle. She dreads the start of sixth grade and feels like she wants—no, needs—a winning game plan.

Luckily, Kaylan and her effortlessly chill BFF, Arianna, have a fool-proof plan for tackling transitions: a list of eleven things they need to do to totally transform themselves before they both turn twelve in November.

But between making guy friends, getting detention (and makeovers!), helping humanity, and having super-candid conversations with their moms about their flaws, the first 100 days of school turn out worse than Kaylan ever imagined. Kaylan and Ari forget to focus on their friendship and soon their loyalty to the list—what was meant to help them keep it together—becomes the very thing tearing their lives apart.

✨☀😎 song: “chilling in the summertime” by the jonas brothers✨☀😎

As much as I love the Jonas Brothers’ new album, (which I’ve been playing on repeat, btw) Chilling in the Summertime is one of their older songs, and it’s so catchy! This song is insanely summery and super relaxing to listen to. (Plus this music video from their Disney channel show way back when is awesome!!)

✨☀😎 book: the maddie diaries by maddie ziegler✨☀😎

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve read this book (as you can see by the worn cover). It’s so, so, good, and one of my favorite non-fiction books ever! It’s also super summery – I read this by the pool yesterday, and I was soooo relaxed. Basically, it’s Maddie Ziegler’s memoir all about her life as a dancer, actress, model, and fashion designer. It’s filled with fun tips and tricks, and some cool photo inserts, too!

Maddie Ziegler knew one day she’d be a star—she just didn’t know how soon that day would come.

At just eight years old, she was cast on Lifetime’s hit reality show Dance Moms and quickly won the hearts of fans everywhere with her natural talent and determination. Soon, she was capturing attention from all over—including pop superstar Sia, who cast her as her dance double in the incredibly popular music video for her hit song “Chandelier.” The rest, as they say, was history.

In this inspirational memoir, Maddie explains the hard work she put into her rise to stardom and how she keeps her balance along the way—starring in music videos, going on tour, and becoming an actress in The Book of Henry with Naomi Watts and Jacob Tremblay. She also answers her fans’ burning questions with wise advice she’s learned on her journey. With honesty, charm, and humor, Maddie offers her unique perspective on making her way in the entertainment world as a young teenager, reflecting on the lessons she’s learned—and preparing for the exciting road ahead.

✨☀😎 song: “good memories” by matthew parker✨☀😎

Madi from Life Undefeated recently recommended Matthew Parker’s album “Daydream”, so I tried it out and absolutely loved it! This was one of my favorite songs from the album, and is so summery. It makes me think of a road trip, and totally takes me back to Colorado. I imagine Riley, Unicorn, and me, hanging out in Colorado together…*sighs dreamily*

✨☀😎 book: kenzie’s rules for life by mackenzie ziegler✨☀😎

This book is by Maddie’s little sister, Mackenzie! It’s a lot like Maddie’s book, and it’s packed with tips, recipes, tutorials, quizzes, and more! I love how each chapter is a “rule” for life based on her experiences and adventures. This book is another favorite and a super fun, inspiring read that’s perfect for summer!

An inspirational, upbeat collection of relatable lessons from the teen sensation, Mackenzie Ziegler—an award-winning dancer, singer/songwriter, and actress.

Growing up is hard, but growing up in the spotlight is even harder. However, Mackenzie Ziegler is taking it all in stride, thanks to her positive attitude on life. From getting her start on Dance Moms, to her sold-out tour alongside Johnny Orlando, there’s nothing that she can’t do.

In Kenzie’s Rules for Life, the dance prodigy, singer/songwriter, actress, and model offers her advice on friendship, family, fitness, style, and positivity. She shares lessons drawn from her own experiences for those navigating through their tween years on how to be happy, healthy, and confident in all aspects of their lives.

✨☀😎 song: “sunflower” by post malone & swan lee✨☀😎

I recently saw Into the Spiderverse (it was pretty good!) and I loved this summery song from it! It has a sweet message and it’s such a cool song. It was super funny in the movie when Miles was listening to it, because I had no idea that it was from Spiderverse until I watched the movie!

✨☀😎 book: jessica darling’s it-list 2 by megan mccaferty✨☀😎

This book is another one that’s set in the school year, but somehow it’s super summery to me. I have no idea why. XD I know it’s kind of weird to put the second book of a duology in a book list, but I haven’t read the first one (although the movie is amazing!) This book tells the tale of an awkward girl who accidentally misinterprets another list her sister gives her to help her survive middle school.

Jessica Darling is getting the hang of seventh grade — finally! While her old BFF, Bridget, is busy talking (nonstop) about her new boyfriend, Burke, Jessica tries to fit in with her new friends, Sara, Manda, and Hope. The IT List instructions from her sister, Bethany, and an epic slumber party may help Jessica secure her spot in the cool clique, but does she even want it?

Megan McCafferty’s It List series introduces readers to Jessica Darling, an unabashedly brainy seventh grader who stays true to herself, even if it means being (totally not) cool.

✨☀😎 song: “happier” by marshmello ft. bastille✨☀😎

This song has such a catchy beat that I love listening to! It’s pretty repetitive, but it’s nice to listen to while you’re reading (one of the books on this list! :P) or making art, because it’s super relaxing and helps me focus for some reason. (Psst…check out this awesome Sunflower x Happier mashup that sounds so perfect!!)

✨☀😎 book: jacky ha-ha: my life is a joke by james patterson✨☀😎

This is another book that’s the second one in a duology/series, but this one is so perfect for summer! It’s set in a beach town in New Jersey at a carnival in the ’90s. Seriously, does it get more summery than that? 😛 It’s about this girl named Jacky who has to get a job and ends up working at the carnival, and there’s Shakespeare plays and summer love and icies and it’s so funny! Seriously – I laughed out loud so many times when I read this book.

Jacky Hart has found a hidden talent in the performing arts, and she’s a triple threat onstage! She wants nothing more than to act and sing all summer – but her parents have other plans for her. Jacky reluctantly signs up for a summer job in her resort town of Seaside Heights, New Jersey, where tourists come to enjoy the beach and fun carnival atmosphere.

Now she has serious responsibilities like her job and babysitting her younger sisters, but Jacky longs to perform in the summer stock performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Can she handle all of her important commitments and still have fun with her friends – or will she learn that juggling isn’t one of her many talents?

It’s crazy to think that summer’s ending soon – at least for me. I’m going back to school around August 12 or 13, and I’m kind of excited, but also sad that summer’s almost over. Expect lots of back-to-school posts, along with the rest of my Colorado Travel Diary series!

Thanks for reading, and have an awesome day!

  1. Oh my gosh, yessssssss. I LOVE The Maddie Diaries. I’ve read mine so many times, too. I really want to read Kenzie’s memoir, too. Also, have you heard that Maddie and Mackenzie’s Dance Mom co-star, Chloe Lukisiak has her own memoir, too? It’s called Girl on Pointe.
